The Passion Statement

I can vividly remember the day when my hands trembled uncontrollably as I approached my first-ever guitar solo, just 8 measures away, in front of my 9th-grade middle school class. In the solitude of my bedroom, I could effortlessly play "Johnny B. Goode," note for note. But performing in front of an actual crowd was a wholly different story. Despite my racing heart, I somehow managed to coax those notes out during that middle school pep rally – not flawlessly, but adequately. And as the final chords resonated through the hall, a distinct feeling washed over me.
I knew I needed more. Fast forward a few decades, and while the nerves are far more manageable, that same exhilaration still surges through me whenever I stand in front of a crowd, backed by a fantastic band. It speaks to the significance of each performance, from that 9th-grade pep rally to a solitary acoustic set, from a joyous wedding reception to a heartwarming community show.
For me, one of the most profound compliments a musician can receive is when someone links a cherished memory to a song they've written. This is an accomplishment I cherish above all else in my career.
The sense of belonging and community that music has gifted me is the most extraordinary aspect of my journey. From my school days to my professional career, I've formed lifelong friendships through the musical ensembles I've been a part of. I've found my place among them—a remarkable place. When I established 7 Sharp 9 in the year 2000, I had no inkling of the incredible people I would meet or the extraordinary experiences that awaited.
Reflecting on the friends and family who have joined me on this journey, I wouldn't change a single moment. Much like I felt after that trembling guitar solo in 9th grade, I still yearn for "more" of what music offers: the fun, the excitement, the connection, the creativity, the sense of belonging, and, above all, the love.
