Meet The Artist
When the list is compiled of the great pop and jazz trumpet virtuosos of this generation, Cecil Welch must surely be included.
This veteran of the concert stage has created a unique style of performance and an ambience with his audiences that guarantees success. As a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra during the tenure of Maestro Robert Shaw, Henry Mancini, the Academy Award winning film composer, heard Cecil perform and offered him a position as his principal trumpeter and soloist. This association allowed Cecil to perform with most of the major symphonies all across America, Canada and abroad, including the London Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and the Tokyo Philharmonic.
During his 18 years with Henry Mancini, Cecil formed his own music production company, Cecil Welch Entertainment, Inc., which has evolved into Cecil Welch Productions, LLC. In addition to music production, the company provides orchestral personnel for many of America’s most talented performers, including Harry Connick Jr., Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John, Josh Groban, and Barry Manilow.
Cecil continues to perform around the globe as a solo trumpet artist and as a lecturer on the history of the trumpet, in both the concert venue and in the educational environment. Since 1997 he has performed as a soloist and lecturer for the Seabourn, Celebrity, and Holland America Cruise Lines. The sea has taken Cecil and his trumpet to every area of the world except the Arctic North. In 2005 he performed for President Jimmy Carter’s 80th birthday celebration at the Carter Center in Atlanta. Recently he appeared as a guest performer on the Jeff Foxworthy comedy TV show Blue Collar Comedy.
In addition to his solo trumpet work, Cecil is also the founder and leader of the Cecil Welch Big Band, a 16-piece orchestra specializing in music for your dancing and listening pleasure. Comparable to the big bands of the ‘40s and ‘50s, it is an outstanding ensemble composed of the top instrumentalists from Atlanta and the Southeast. Visually exciting and dynamic to hear, the Cecil Welch Big Band adds a special touch of class to any event. Past performances include: Super Bowl 2000 (Atlanta) – NFL owners private party; Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards Show; President Jimmy Carter’s 75th Birthday Party Gala.
As a recording artist, Cecil has produced four solo trumpet CDs, including a tribute to the music of Henry Mancini, Too Little Time, and a salute to the big band trumpeters of the past, Moonlight Blues. These recordings are under his own recording label, Brass Menagerie Recording Company. Cecil is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, the Atlanta Rotary Club, and the Cherokee Country Club.
