5 Tips on Choosing Party Bands for Your Wedding

Musicians playing a guitar and saxophone

On your list of wedding to-dos, finding the right music usually ranks high on the list! What kind of vibe do you want to set for your big day? Will it be reverent and romantic or lighthearted and laidback? Whatever type of ambience you want to create, the party band you choose can help you get there.

Yet, if you've started researching vendors, you've already noticed that there are lots of different bands out there! With so many to choose from, how can you make sure you're hiring the best one for your needs?

Choosing party bands might seem a little daunting, but it doesn't have to be. By taking the right steps, you can make sure that the one you pick is perfect for the party. Here are eight tips to keep in mind as you narrow down the selection.

1. Ask for Recommendations

One of the best ways to gauge whether or not a band is for you? Ask your trusted friends and family members if they have anyone they'd recommend!

Have they been to a recent live performance that blew them away? Did they attend another wedding or event where the music was incredible? Many musicians rely on word-of-mouth advertising to help them find new clients, and great feedback goes a long way.

To get more opinions, consider expanding your search to social media. Using tools such as Facebook Recommendations, you can ask your online friends and followers to submit their own suggestions for stellar local talent.

2. Read Online Reviews

Another way to learn more about any act you're considering for your special day? Once you have a short list of options, be sure to read online reviews.

This is an easy to way to hear what others are saying about the band in question. Start your search by checking out each act's website and social media profiles. From there, you can also read any other reviews you see as you scan the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

As you take in this outside feedback, look for trends in the commentary. Do multiple people mention the band's professionalism and prompt arrival? What about their entertainment factor and their wide catalog of songs? This is a great way to get a glimpse of what you can expect if you hire the band for your big event.

3. Take in a Show

Input from others is great, but nothing beats actually seeing a band perform live. Especially if you're on the fence about a band or stuck between two different ones, check out their schedule and attend a live show!

If this isn't possible, you should at least be able to listen to past clips of their performances online. Most musicians will have their own channel on YouTube, or will upload clips to a dedicated page on their website. Check out their instruments, vocals and overall style and consider how everything would fit into your wedding celebration.

4. Review Their Set List

Most reputable party bands have a set list that they follow when performing for events. If you've made it to this point in the evaluation phase, you should already know the style of songs that they're used to playing.

From bluegrass bands to jazz ensembles, you'll find a wide range of styles as you search. A set list can confirm whether or not their musical style matches yours.

While you're scrolling through the songs, keep in mind that a set list and an overall song list are different.

A set list is a set of songs that the band usually plays at events like yours. For instance, a wedding set list may cover a three-hour span, broken into one-hour sections. The first hour might include slower tunes for your cocktail hour, followed by family-friendly modern favorites during dinner Then, it will likely end with slower songs to round out the evening or more amplified jams to kick off the midnight dance floor craze.

Not loving the songs on the set list? Don't throw in the towel just yet.

Request the (much longer) song list and see if the band would be willing to make a few adjustments. They should be able to throw in a few songs that you particularly love, and steer clear of any that you absolutely don't want played.

5. Let Your Personal Tastes Rule

Sure, your aunt might be able to get you in touch with an amazing local trio that specializes in classical music. That might be ideal for some couples, but if you and your partner's tastes lean more toward country and pop, then you're unlikely to enjoy the experience.

Above all else, keep your personal preferences in mind. This should be a night that you look back on and smile for the rest of your life, feeling confident that it was a true reflection of your personalities. That said, don't feel pressured to go with a particular band just because they're popular or their reviews are glowing.

At the end of the day, you know what you like to listen to and what you don't prefer. Talk to your significant other and make sure that the band you choose is music to your ears.
